Crabs in red masala (Tambdya masalyatlyo kurlyo):


Crabs or kurlyo as called in Goan language are the most loved and demanding sea food all over Goa and around the globe. Its prepared in various ways in each state. I have already shared Goan xacuti of crabs and crabs dry preparation called sukhe on my blog earlier. Today I thought of preparing my crabs in a slightly different masala made on my own way on the spot and to my surprise it turned out super awesome.

Let me take you to the recipe.

Ingredients:
Crabs-5-6 medium size

Spices to roast (10):
Cloves-2
Cinnamon-1 inch piece
Coriander seeds-1 tsp
Peppercorns-5-6
Nutmeg-1 small piece
Jaivatri-1 small piece
Fenugreek seeds-1 tsp
Star anise-1 petal
Fennel seeds-1 tsp
Red chillies-2 kashmiri, 2 bedgi

Onions-3 medium size
Garlic pods-6-7
Tomatoes-2
Scraped coconut-1 cup
Khuskhus-1 tsp
Coriander leaves-1 fistful
Karipatta leaves-5-6
Tamarind-1 small ball
Ghee-2 tablespoon
Oil as required
Salt as per taste

Extra masala powders:
Jeera powder-1 tsp
Coriander powder-1 tsp
Kashmiri red chilli powder-1 tsp
Garam masala-1 tsp
Butter-1 tablespoon

Method:
Clean the crabs properly and keep aside. You will get the method in my earlier posts of crab dishes.

Roast all the spices mentioned under spices to roast section in required amount of oil and keep aside. Then roast 2 onions long slitted, garlic pods, tomatoes and keep aside. Cool and grind everything along with tamarind, coriander leaves, 3-4 karipatta leaves to fine paste using little amount of water. This paste will be red in color so I call in red masala paste.

Roast coconut and khuskhus and grind to a paste and keep aside. This is coconut paste.

In your cooking pot, add ghee, add 1 onion chopped, remaining karipatta leaves, above red masala paste and saute well till oil oozes out. Then add all the spice powders mentioned above. Add butter and saute very well. Add cleaned crabs and water and let it cook well.

Add coconut paste, salt and give a vigorous boil and done.

Your crabs in red masala gravy is ready. Serve it with Goan rice, or rotis.
