Kalwa tonak



Kalwa are called clamps in english. These are the shell fishes which are found attached to the rocks on beaches. Fisherwomen in goa go early in morning to remove them out of the rocks. In goa we prepare a tasty masala out of these clamps and its one of the favourite goan fish recipes among all goans.

Ingredients :
1 cup Kalwa,
1/2 cup coconut
Khada masala- lavang, tikki, jaiphal, star anise,  taken in small proportions of 1or 2 as reqd,
Coriander seeds-1 tsp
Peppercorns-1 tsp
Tamarind paste-1 tsp
Onions -2 ( 1 long slitted to fry and 1 finally chopped)
Garlic-5-6 pods
Potatoes-1-2

Method:

In a spoon of oil u need to roast all masal as, then onions and garlic. Finally dry roast coconut.

Grind all roasted ingredients above with tamarind in a mixer.

Now in a cooking vessel add oil, onions chopped, then chopped potatoes, Kalwa, water. Let it cook. Add mixer ground paste, salt, let it boil and you are done.

Serve with rice or goan bread or chapaties.
