Uttappa
Uttappa- (a famous South Indian breakfast dish):
Uttappa is one of the famous breakfast or an evening supper item all over South Indian coast. Its basically made by making a base of rice/urad dal mixture and topped with onions, tomatoes, green chillies etc. Some even make by using rawa mixturw batter to make the base. You can say its a kind of a pizza only cheese is missing !!
My husband loves uttappa a lot from restaurants. One day even I relished it in restaurant, and really its a tummy full dish, really. So today I thought I will try to make it at home and it came out very nice. Its a perfect heavy breakfast dish which fulls your stomach with just 1.
Let's see the recipe.
Ingredients:
Dosa batter- 1 medium size vessel full ( to make uttappas for a family of 5-6 members)
Chopped onions-2-4
Chopped tomatoes-3
Chopped Green chillies-7-8
Chopped coriander leaves-1 cup
Salt as needed
Oil as required
Method:
If you have leftover dosa batter of previous day its nice, otherwise you need to prepare a batter by first soaking rice and urad dal in ratio of 3:1 for 5-6 hrs and grind it. Keep overnight to ferment it. And the batter is ready for use next morning. Add required salt in the batter and mix well.
In a bowl mix chopped onions, tomatoes, green chillies and coriander leaves. Add a pinch of salt for taste and mix well.
Now heat your tawa, add oil, add laddleful of batter, spread a little in circular motion ( not too thin, the base has to be thick). Then put above bowl mixture on top evenly spreading and pressing in the batter all over. Close with lid and let it cook.
Then flip over and put oil on sides and let it cook closed. Again flip over 2 times, till done on both sides.
Your uttappa is ready. Serve with chutney and sambhar.
