Vann ( Goan popular dal)
Vann ( Goan popular dal ):
How many of you have tasted this popular dal of Goa commonly prepared during all of the Goan festive occasions ? Yes, the most demanding dal in every home of Goa, favorite among kids, relished by all adults with dalop of ghee, very healthy and very much tasty. Any festivals like Ganesh Chaturti, Ekadashi, Tulsi Vivah, Or any occasions from wedding, puja, etc, vann is an mandatory menu dish. Vann, xitt(rice), toop(ghee) with lonche( pickle) and papad makes the perfect thali of every Goan. A vegetable along is a compliment. Its the most favorite thali of our kids.
Vann is not only prepared during occassions but also on regular basis in every Hindu Saraswat Goan home. In Maharashtra, they call vann as varan. Their preparation may slightly differ. I have shared with you purely Goan preparation.
Today I thought of sharing with you its recipe. Very simple to prepare , healthy, high in protein content and very nutritious.
Ingredients:
Toor dal ( split pigeon peas)-1 bowl
Jaggery-1/2 bowl
Scraped coconut-1 bowl
Salt as per taste
Jeera-1 tsp
Peppercorns-2-4
Haldi powder-1 tsp
Pure ghee( while serving)
Water as required
Method:
Soak toor dal in water for 30 minutes
Pressure cooker soaked dal for 2 whistles.
Grind in mixer scraped coconut, jeera, peppercorns, haldi powder with little water to form a paste.
In a vessel add cooked dal from cooker, grinded coconut paste from mixer, jaggery, salt and keep to cook. Add more water to adjust the consistency of your dal gravy.
Give a nice boil and you are done. Your vann is ready.
While serving add rice, pour vann on top and a dalop of pure ghee. Accomplish with pickle and papad.
Not to forget batatyachi kapa( potato fritters) or bhaji ( pakodas) are altime favorite for kids as well as adults with vann. Our festive thali includes vann, tomato sar, bhaji or kapa, pickle, papad, khatkhate, moogagati etc etc...lots you can say...some recipes are already on my blog, those interested can view them.
Please note: Apart from a simple veg menu, your non veg menu also turns out to be lip smacking if you accompany vann along with any fish sukhe like bangdyache sukhe (mackeral sukhe)/tisryache sukhe( clams sukhe), recipes of which are already included in my blog or any tawa fried fish. Try out and you will be loving the combo of vann with non veg dishes.
Happy cooking!!
