Moogadaliche Kann ( Moongdal Kheer):


One of the most ancient and traditional sweet dish recipe of Goa is 'Kann'. Its made out of whole moong or moong dal. So it can be also called as Moong Kheer or Monngdal Kheer.
Here am going to give you the recipe of kann made from moongdal.

Moongdal is a healthy version among dal which is high in protein content but very light to our tummy, can be easily digested. This kann made from moongdal is prepared as a part of fast during festive occasions like ekadashi, sankashti, chaturthi, Mahashivratri, etc.

Let's see the recipe.
If you are preparing kann from whole moongs( the green ones with skin) then you need to wash them properly, dry them and then roast.
If you are preparing kann from moongdal( the yellow split dal without green skin), then you need to roast them first and then wash them.

So let's begin with the recipe. Its very simple and quick to prepare. Some use milk to prepare it, but the traditional method is to use coconut milk in the recipe.

Ingredients and method:

Dry roast 1 cup of moongdal on low flame for 5 mins till you get nice aroma. Off the flame.
Add 2 cups of cold water and keep aside in a bowl for 5 mins.
Then wash this dal properly and cook in a cooker with little water just to soak dal for 1 whistle.

Meanwhile scrape 1 coconut and grind it in mixer with 2 cardamoms. Strain and collect the coconut milk in a bowl.

In the cooking vessel add cooked moongdal from cooker, add 1 cup jaggery, 1 tsp salt. Add extracted coconut milk, and cashewnuts. Let it boil nicely. Add cardamom powder 1 tsp and boil a while and you are done. Off the flame.

Serve hot in a cup or a plate.
Its mostly served during festive occasions along with puri, potato bhaji. Even at my home, i prepare kann along with these 2 dishes. I have shown below the plating of the same.
