Malvani crabs

Malvani crabs (Crab curry of Malvan): 



Today let's relish the authentic preparation of crabs from the Malvan area which is a town and taluka located at the Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra, most well known for its Sindhudurg fort.

Malvani cuisine is the standard cuisine of the South Konkan region of Maharashtra and Goa. Malvani cuisine is pre-dominantly non vegetarian including fish dishes, shellfoods like prawns, crabs, clamps etc and also popular for its spicy chicken and mutton curry.

Malvani food consists of their homemade malvani masala which is the inclusion of specific spices, coconut- sometimes dry or fresh ones and also sometimes the rich creamy coconut milk. Different dishes are prepared in their own unique way.

So let's jump into Malvani crabs or you can also call it crab curry of Malvan. I must say it's really awesome. Try once and you will love the same.


Ingredients and method:

Clean crabs and then marinate cleaned crabs with 1 tsp of haldi, 1 tsp red chilli powder and keep aside.

Preparation of masala:

In 2-3 tsp of oil roast 4 cloves, 1 cinnamon, 1 tsp peppercorns, 2 tsp coriander seeds, 1 star anise petal, 2 pieces of dagadful black flower, 1 small petal of javitri, 1 black cardamom (masala elaichi), 1 tsp fennel seeds, 1 tsp jeera, 2 green cardamom, 1 bay leaf, bedgi red chillies 4-5 and keep aside.

Then add 2-3 tsp oil and saute 4-5 garlic cloves and  long slitted 3 onion till brown. Add 1 tomato and saute. Add 1 tsp poppy seeds. 

Then cool everything and grind to fine paste with handful of coriander leaves and required water. This is paste 1.

Secondly dry roast fresh coconut till light brown and add 1 tsp haldi powder and 1 tsp red chilli powder. Cool and grind with a small tamarind ball to fine paste. This is paste 2.

Heat a vessel, add 2 tsp oil, add 1 onion chopped finely and saute. Add marinated crabs. Add sufficient water for crabs to cook.

Once the crabs are cooked, slow the flame, add paste 1 of all the roasted spices and onion tomato coriander leaves.

After 2-3 minutes add paste 2 of roasted coconut.

Check the consistency of your gravy and accordingly add water.


Add salt and 1 tsp sugar for balancing the pungent tastes of red chillies.

Give a boil. Mix a handful of chopped coriander leaves on top , stir and you are done. 


Wait for atleast 20 minutes for flavours of crabs to pour down in your gravy.

You delicious crab curry of Malvan is ready. 

Serve with rice or bread.
