Near to Satyanarayan Puja Sheera

Near to Satyanarayan Puja Sheera (Goan style Satyanarayan Puja Sheera with honey):

Hello everyone, you all reading my blog would be surprised at the title of my dish today. One question arises as to why I must have mentioned 'Near to' prior to the name. The reason is a genuine one. In Goa the traditional method of preparing Satyanarayan Puja Sheera differs in terms of measurements and method of preparation though the ingredients remain the same.

In Goan traditional method, for Satyanarayan Puja, Sheera is prepared using 1 and 1/4 cup measurement of 3 basic ingredients like rawa, ghee, sugar. Milk quantity is almost in double to triple ratio.  Water is not added. And preparation is always done in huge quantities like in kgs.

Today I have tried making satyanarayan puja sheera but in small quantity to relish at my breakfast but the measurements I have taken are not as per the traditional ones but I have made variations to it as per my convenience, but the final taste is exactly or i can say almost equals to that of the puja sheera. So I mentioned as my sheera to be near to puja sheera.

For a beginner this is the best method to follow. Since to make a perfect Satyanarayana puja sheera only an expertise is required. You must have hands on the same on almost regular basis. I am not an expertise on it but I love to try out some new dishes, so my mind and heart worked together to give it a first try.

For a family of approx 10 people, the below measurements are perfect.

So let's begin.

Ingredients:

3 cups rawa

3 cups sugar

Ghee 5-6 tbsp approx for roasting rawa

and around 2 tbsp approx at last step.

1 and half cup milk, 4 and half cup water

Honey -1 and half cup

Cashewnuts and khismis as required

Green Cardamoms-5-6

2 bananas

Salt -1 tsp

Method:

Make a mixture of water and milk and Keep the mixture to boil.

Cut your cashewnuts into small pieces, cut bananas into small slices.

Dry roast rawa for 5 mins on medium flame.

Then add ghee 2-3 tbsp first and roast rawa again properly. Remove rawa and keep aside

Now add more 3 tbsp of ghee, put pieces of banana, and dry fruits and roast them nicely. Now put in roasted rawa. Mix very well.

Add salt.

Add boiled water milk mixture. Stir well and close the lid. Keep for 2 mins

Then open , mix well , add sugar. Mix again and close the lid and allow it to cook for another 2-3 mins.

Make green cardamom powder.

Open and add approximate 2 tbsp amount of ghee again and mix well. Close and cook for another 1 min.

Open and add cardamom powder, honey. Mix very well. Close.

Now off the flame. Your sheera slightly becomes thick now as it absorbs water, milk and honey.

At the last step now, add remaining ghee and spread it with spoon on top of your sheera to get a smooth texture and slightly on the sides of vessel.

You are done with your sheera close to or near to ☺️ Satyanarayana puja sheera.

You can relish it and see the taste almost resembles to traditional Satyanarayana Puja Sheera of Goan Style

You can follow few tips here:

1) Always use thick rawa not the thin one. As thick rawa nicely puffs up in ghee.

2) You can use only milk and skip water or add equal amount of milk and water.

3) You can add 1:3 ratio of rawa and milk or water but this ratio makes your sheera too soft or watery and it takes more amount for rawa to absorb all milk or water. Also it takes more time for sheera to settle down to thick texture to serve. Only an expertise can go for this ratio.

4) In Goa we use honey for such kind of sheera but use of honey does not compromise on the quantity of sugar. You can skip if u don't like it.

5) Vary the quantity of bananas used. You can add more or less, depends on your choice.

6) In dry fruits you can add badam too.

7) You can vary the amount of ghee added. Add more or less as per your choice. Remember, addition of more ghee at the last step on top of your sheera makes your sheera more soft, and also it improves it's texture.
